The Arubar Lounge on Forest Road is playing host to a night based around ‘Malcolm X and The Music of Rebellion’ on Friday 9 December. The evening will feature a discussion on politics and racism followed by a soul/funk/hip-hop club.

The ‘Music of Rebellion’ night will be introduced by Martin Smith from Love Music, Hate Racism. You can find out more about their work here. There will be a discussion around politics, music and the civil rights movement in 1960s America, and racism today. At some point the night will turn into a club, playing soul, funk, hip-hop and house music from the era, so expect some classic tunes from Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and others.

The evening has been organised by the Waltham Forest Socialist Workers Party and all proceeds go to the Socialist Worker financial appeal. You can find out more details about that appeal here. If you’re into that, then looks like it could be a decent night. It’s good to see a club night in Walthamstow, something the area is really lacking I think.

‘Music of Rebellion’ takes place on Friday 9 December from 8pm to 2am at the Arubar Lounge, 524-528 Forest Road, E17 4NB (The Arubar Lounge used to be called The Cavern Club). Tickets are £10 waged and £5 unwaged.

Here’s a video of Martin Gaye, to give your ears a treat and get you in the mood.
